M&S has released a new pack of crisps for Halloween but shoppers have been left divided. As ‘spooky season’ starts next month, retailers bring out themed treats to mark this occasion.
A variety of new snacks are seen in supermarkets, like assorted bags of sweets with Halloween packaging or pumpkin spice flavoured baked goods. The well-known food blogger New Foods UK shared a photo on Facebook after it spotted the new Halloween Wicked Pickled Worms crisps from M&S. The social media page described the product as “amazing” and compared them to the Walkers pickled onion flavour French Fries but social media users shared that the crisps reminded them of something else.
M&S has become known for bringing out viral or unique food items, like its Marmite and caramel sauce.
Its pickled worm crisps have caused a stir online with a number of people likening them to mealworms.
One commenter on New Foods UK Facebook’s post said: “I can’t get over that they look like mealworms though.”
A second agreed: “They seriously look like dried mealworms.” However, a reply to this comment reads: “They’re way bigger than mealworms don’t worry!
“I’ve eaten two bags of these already…they’re like pickled onion Monster Munch crossed with Chipsticks.”
A third user added: “Omg I thought they were cooked mealworms like the ones I get for the birds.”
Someone else stated: “They look revolting.” A further user chimed in: “They look like dried mealworms so it’s a no from me!”
Among the criticism, there were also some positive remarks about the new M&S Halloween treat.
A fan of the crisps declared: “They are so addictive, had them the other day.” Another praised: “Absolutely delicious, my new fave.”
Others left comments, such as “so good, very tasty”, “these are so good” and “these look interesting.”
The description of the product on M&S’ website says: “Our Halloween Wicked Pickled Worms make a spooky savoury snack.
“Wiggly potato shapes with a tangy pink pickled onion seasoning, these creepy-crawly nibbles are made for sharing at your Halloween party.”
The crisps are made from a blend of potato flour and starch and have a light, crispy texture. To suit the Halloween theme, the packaging has a bright green colour and a picture of a witch holding up some worms in her hands.
M&S has unveiled an array of Halloween-themed treats to tempt shoppers, from its pickled worms to Halloween Cheesy Bat Fangs to the Spooky Chilli or Cheese Tortillas.
There’s also sweet treats, like its Hallow–Scream Munch combining chocolate-covered treats, including jelly beans and malt balls with salted pretzels, sugar coated milk chocolates with crispy rice centres and fudgy brownie pieces smothered in creamy white chocolate, and its Petrifying Pumpkins milk chocolates.
